Evening Career Events

Evening Career Events are three hour career events for PhD students, at the University of Leicester. This focuses on PhD students from the College of Social Sciences and the College of Arts, Humanities & Law. Seven events are run over a two year cycle, each one focussing on a particular career sector. Each event consists of a number of speakers from the career sector, each speaker giving a short presentation to a prescribed format. This format includes an outline of the individual's career experience, a description of working in their area and hints and tips for aspirants and newcomers in terms of working in the field and the organisation. An additional part of the Evening Carer Event is an exhibition from some employers and recruiters in the particular employment sector.

Rationale, aims and outcomes
What is the rationale for doing this?
How does it fit with institutional strategy?
What are the main features of the provision?
What are the aims and expected outcomes?

The range of employment sectors encapsulated by the College of Social Sciences and the College of Arts, Humanities and Law is a broad one.  Enabling PhD students from within these two colleges to have an appropriate vehicle for learning about career opportunities requires an event or events of broad scope.  By utilising a number of events, as described, it is possible to provide insights and opportunities of the breadth and depth necessary.  The timing of the Evening Career Events also allows students to attend outside of time required for study, research and other activities.

To provide PhD students from the College of Social Sciences and the College of Arts, Humanities & Law with insights into career realities, opportunities and development requirements.  The Evening Career Events are designed to accomplish this across a broad range of career sectors.

Engagement
Are there any pre-requisites for engagement, e.g. levels of skill, years of experience, essential pre-activities?
How many participate in each 'activity'?

Whilst the events are designed for PhD students in the two specified colleges, students from other colleges are also welcome to attend.

Evaluation: benefits, challenges and next steps
How do you monitor effectiveness?
Who do you seek feedback from?
Do you have benchmarks?

Benefits centre around enabling PGRs to develop an understanding of the realities of a broad range of career options.  This empowers them to make an informed career choice.

Engaging students who are focussed on the immediate challenges of their PhD.

In the initial two years the Evening Career Events are designed to cover seven employment sectors.  Following from the experience of the initial two years of delivery modifications may be made to the scope and content of the events.
