The ‘your first three years’ programme for newly appointed research active staff provides training in topics relevant to academic practice, including:

• induction - an introduction to University structures, key people and support for researchers
• good practice in grant writing
• managing projects, project finances and staff
• training for teaching 
• training for supervising research and research degree students

A programme accredited by the Institue of Leadership and Management (ILM), covering both theory and practice of management and leadership. It is designed for Research Staff who are interested in developing these key skill areas, both to support their current roles and their career development – whether in academia, industry, business or other contexts. Format: induction and taster (60-120 mins), seven one-day workshops over four months, a two-day residential intensive with a computer business game simulation, directed reading and discussion via an online forum, two written assessments.

This 'PI Development Programme' offers a range of transferable skills training, designed to assist the professional development of postdoctoral researchers, who are new to, or aspire to, the role of research leader.

A Researcher Development Framework has been produced by the Researcher Task Group at the University of Stirling to assist researchers to make decisions regarding their personal, professional and career development opportunities.

The CAPM, is internationally recognised and valued as an introductory certificate, leading eventually to the PMP (Project Management Professional) certificate which is required for professional project managers worldwide.
