The aim of the proposal was to demonstrate and pilot a mutually beneficial regional collaboration in the area of generic skills training for research students.

    The UCL Graduate School created and leads a collaborative skills training programme for local HE institutions. Its purpose is to allow research students in the participating institutions to enhance their generic and transferable skills, through attending training at other member institutions. Students benefit from access to training at the range of participating institutions, and also through meeting and networking with students outside the confines of their home institution.

    The Social Media sessions demonstrated a successful integration of a student-led initiative within a formal graduate training provision. The initiative underlined the importance of engaging PhD students in their own learning and training needs, in both sharing expertise with peers and in contributing to their own professional development. In doing so, it demonstrated to other postgraduate researchers how they might utilise their own areas of expertise to develop further student-led initiatives.

    As part of a regional JISC-funded initiative, we will build web-based tools to provide a regional web presence which will enable advertising of postgraduate development opportunities accross the northeast region, a means for researchers to electronically book onto activities at other institutions and to provide a means to electronically pass attendence records, etc. back to a participant's home institution.
