This course supports researchers whilst they write publications. Giving them practical help with structuring and writing papers and also support to find the time and motivation produce a complete first draft.

An institutional programme provided by departments, faculties and the University for postgraduate researchers. Complimented by an online tool 'MyPGR' containing a JSS-linked Development Needs Analysis, Record of Supervision Meetings, Skills Record and Personal Development Planner.

This is a brief summary of the organisational model that we have adopted in order to work more closely with Schools, Faculties and Departments and 'partner' with them in understanding and providing for the needs of their particular staff in a ‘bespoke’ way where appropriate. This positions us better to target our resource towards meeting real needs, while striving for enhanced alignment between UCL’s research strategy and individual aspirations. This new model also enables us to work more closely in partnership with other key people deployed at a Faculty or Department level, such as Research Facilitators, Research Leaders, HR Consultants, Faculty Managers etc.

Workshops are facilitated by editors of high impact journals who discuss with participants key aspects within the writing process and the aims of the journal. Brief writing exercises on papers published by participants take place during the workshop. In addition, selected published articles from the journal are being discussed highlighting relevant points of interest that inform the writing process.

A series of methodology taster sessions which provide a basic introduction to a methodology, its application with examples, its advantages and its limitations or drawbacks. The seminars will later be available on the web as podcasts, together with key readings and links to other relevant resources on the web, making this a valuable web repository on research methodologies.

Based on 'Speed PhD', PhD Process similarly aims to provide researchers with an insight into the demands of a research degree and improve their research performance and employability. As in 'Speed PhD' the workshop last 2 full days, participants work in groups and are allocated a fictional student and research project. It is the task of the group to take on the role of the fictional student and get through their Research Degree. The project is carried out within the Group Work sessions listed on the course schedule. The group must manage their activities and their supervisor and make decisions to ensure they submit a thesis on time.

The internet is a rich resource for researchers but its vast size means that even the most proficient user can struggle to find relevant information for academic work. This session will focus on the advacned features of Google Scholar and discuss its relative strengths and weaknesses as an alternative to library databases. It will also look at using other sources to find academic and grey literature on the web by exploring a range of search engines and making the most of advanced internet searching.

Developing research funding applications is a multi-stage process including; refining the question and methods, finding collaborators, identifying appropriate funding sources, knowing what makes a successful application and who to get advice from, costing the bid and writing the application form. This project seeks to address some of these stages. The specific objectives are: 1. To create a series of short video clips/ audio recordings featuring staff from Department of Health Sciences, covering: • Features of successful applications. These will spotlight on senior staff who are panel members for some of the major health research funding bodies. • Staff experiences of applying for external funding. These will contain reflections of staff who have applied for research funding, both successful and unsuccessful. These resources will be stored on the Health Sciences Staff Intranet (on a web page dedicated to the project) with links from both research and teaching related pages. An online survey will give people who access the resource an opportunity to feedback their views on its usefulness. 2. To establish a Learning Set of early to mid career research staff to facilitate the development of skills in writing research funding applications. Early to mid career researchers will present research ideas to the learning set for discussion or commenting on applications in progress. The group would meet once a month and maintain an email list of members that could be contacted for advice when needed. The project team will be supported by two senior members of staff (Karen Bloor and Karen Spilsbury) and has been approved by Head of Department (Professor Christine Godfrey) and Chair of Departmental Research Committee (Professor Nicky Cullum).

Online Career Skills Portfolio - A flexible provision all PGR students at Liverpool, independent of their place of research, with opportunities to research and prepare for their future career. The course provides access to online resources, participation in online discussions, encouragement to engage in self-chosen activities and requires a structured meeting with their supervisor. The course also fulfils the career Skills requirement in the PhD programme at the University of Liverpool.

The York Award: Researchers is a certificate of the University of York which recognises and rewards those PhD students who undertake an active programme of personal development over the course of their registration. It operates alongside degree programmes and aims to capture the impact of all aspects of university life in terms of the skills and experiences that they will find beneficial in their future life and work. The process of applying for the York Award: Researchers will allow postgraduate researchers to evaluate their unique set of skills and experiences, and ensure that they are able to communicate the value of their research degree and transferrable skills to an academic and a lay audience.
