The University Research Day (URD) is a one-day event showcasing research within the university which provides an opportunity for the University to engage with the public while promoting cross-disciplinary networking.

A strategy has been developed to support the achievement of the University’s Strategic Plan in terms of its statements relating to researcher development. A parallel operational plan lays out the key actions that have been devised with the aim of achieving the strategic aims.

Participants in this programme are drawn from projects funded by Strathclyde University’s EPSRC Knowledge Transfer Account and other cognate projects. The programme runs over three consecutive days and includes two three-hour sessions each day. The sessions are presented by staff engaged in research in the broad area of management studies, focussing on different features of knowledge exchange and innovation. 

In March 2011 the first Research Staff Development Forum was hosted by the University’s extended Researcher Development Team: Research and Knowledge Exchange Services, HR, the Centre for Academic Practice and Learning Enhancement (CAPLE), and the Careers Service. This event was aimed at all Strathclyde research staff and provided opportunities for sharing thoughts and concerns, finding out about institutional and national developments, as well as networking with other members of the research community.

This is an online course developed by a consortium of UK institutions to help researchers understand what it means to be entrepreneurial and to develop those skills for success.

This is a two day workshop during which a series of talks by successful grant applicants illustrate the range of research that is supported by the different research councils, as well as offering insights into the world of EU funded projects. Participants develop their own research proposals in advance of day 2 and then work in small interdisciplinary groups (mock panels) to review and evaluate each other’s proposals.

The Researcher Innovation Fund (RIF) is a small pot of funding set-up by the University for early career research staff and PGR students to bid for researcher-led transferable skills initiatives.

This initiative, which seeks to develop potential future research leaders by allowing individuals to gain experience supporting the development of others, is considered an effective way of achieving long term impact and sustainability from investment in researcher development. Derived from existing good practice and responding to feedback from the researcher community, it involves early career researchers being seconded to work in multidisciplinary liaison across the researcher community to develop appropriate training and ensure that the Researcher Development Programme meets the needs of individual researchers.

This online resource for early career research staff is designed to support career development, with specific sections on identifying skills, the career decision-making process, career management, and finding and applying for jobs.

This new 20 credit postgraduate module, first delivered in 2010-11, is designed to enable research staff to enhance their career development.  It forms the foundation module in a newly approved programme: the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Advanced Academic Studies (Researcher Development).  The module aims to enable participants to identify their career development needs as researchers and to plan and begin to implement activities to meet those needs.
