Institution: University of LeicesterThe Skills for the Professional Researcher (SPR) programme is at the core of our provision for postdoctoral and early career researchers. Presented by the University's Academic Practice Unit, the programme consists of a series of workshops that seek to combine depth with breadth, with sessions aimed at helping researchers hone their research skills (including specialist IT skills) and research management techniques, whilst also building capacity to enable them to take their research outside academia and engage with the wider world. The programme continues to evolve as new needs are identified and sought to be addressed.

The scheme also underpins the university's commitment to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers (2008) which specifically highlights the importance of mentoring for research staff.

Institution: University of LiverpoolTeaching for Researchers is an accredited L&T for Research Staff and PhD students who see teaching as a professional development opportunity. The course consists of 2 modules and each module takes place over an academic semester. In total, participants have to attend 4 sessions in each module. There are also support sessions planned that are tutor led and link to the assessment tasks that need to be completed. All sessions last 2 hours over lunch-time. The course started in January 2010, two new cohorts have been created for the October 2010 intake. In total, +130 participants are currently registered, attend sessions and submit assignments. The course is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) The high interest from RS and PGRs demonstrates that researchers see learning and teaching as a valuable training opportunity as part of their personal and professional development.

Institution: University of LiverpoolA one day conference for research staff in the University of Liverpool. The day consisted of plenary presentations and parallel sessions and offered to research staff the opportunity to explore in detail three main themes: T1: Enterprising Researcher and Knowledge Exchange T2: Supporting Research Excellence T3: Funding and Fellowships Academic staff with PI roles, senior researchers and the University's senior management contributed to the day's sessions. An interactive Q&A panel discussion offered a very informative ending to a successful and highly productive day.
