Last modified: 04/11/2009 09:37:47
Institution: University of Leicester
This new post, based in the Graduate School Reading Room in the University Library, facilitates the development of a research information forum for the postgraduate research community. It promotes a meeting place, both in the library and online, where researchers can discuss and exchange ideas. As facilitator, I provide a point of contact for the University services available to the community, liaising especially with Student Support and Development Services, Staff Development Centre, the Graduate School, Beyond Distance Research Alliance, the Research Support Office, and the Students’ Union. The post is part of a Library initiative to develop the Graduate School Readign Room as more than a study space, providing a technology-rich virtual and physical forum for interdisciplinary postgraduate networking. It aims to co-ordinate and publicise new services for research postgraduates, including a Graduate School Media Zoo, a Virtual Reading Room, and a programme of events for postgraduate research students, such as training in digital research and networking technologies and a regular Thesis Workshop. These initiatives are used to promote academic and social networking for postgraduate research students across disciplinary boundaries, encouraging collaboration and intellectual exchange as well as enhancing the training experience and improving the productivity of the doctoral and post-doctoral research community at Leicester. The Graduate School Media Zoo will provide opportunities for postgraduate students to keep up to date with new research technologies and to experiment with their use. -
