Biography
Dr Barbara Gabrys joined the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division in October 2007. Her brief is to focus on the development and support of new members of academic staff in their academic practice. She was responsible for the development of the Division’s training under its Centre of Excellence in Preparation for Academic Practice, funded by HEFCE until 2010, preparing graduate research students and postdoctoral researchers for academic practice. Barbara originally trained in Physics, and over the years migrated into Materials Science. She has been an Academic Visitor in Department of Materials since 2003. She has an extensive experience of working with multiple nationalities and in several countries, and remains an active researcher in polymer science. Her ongoing researcher development project is focused on conducting a cross-divisional seminar series ‘Building a successful career in the sciences’ (formerly ‘Preparation for academic practice in the sciences’). She is a co-author, jointly with Professor Jane Langdale, of a book ‘How to succeed as a scientist: from postdoc to professor’, published in 2012 by Cambridge University Press. Barbara is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
