I've just been to an interesting session given by Dr Jose van Aeist of the University of Utrecht which examined the role that emotional support plays in effective supervision of researchers. Jose outlined some developments at her university that have examined the way in which providing greater levels of emotional support can help supervisors and researchers to deal with common problems.

Key messages included:

  • The importance of establishing mutually agreed structures and roles early on in the doctorate
  • The value of attending to emotional issues around the development of the researcher and their project
  • The value that introducing a third party (with focus on emotional development) into supervisory relationships can bring.
