Seven Secrets of Highly Successful Research Students - session for PGRs28 January 2011

Event overview

This workshop is being run by Cardiff University. With support from the Vitae SWW Hub, postgraduate researchers from HEIS in the region are invited to attend.

13.00 - 16.00

What do postgraduate researchers do to finish on time, to overcome isolation, doubt and writer's block, and to enjoy the process? And just as importantly what do they do in order to spend guilt-free time with their family and friends and perhaps even have holidays? If this sounds appealing, then this session will be of particular use to you.

This workshop describes the key habits that will make a difference to how quickly and easily you complete your PhD and increase your effectiveness and outcomes in the following key areas:

* how you deal with your supervisor

* how you structure your study time

* your attitude (or lack thereof!) in relation to your research

* dealing with writer's block or having difficulty writing

* getting the help you need when you are stuck

* juggling multiple commitments and never having enough time

* keeping on going when the going gets tough

The workshop is presented bt Dr Hugh Kearns

Dr Hugh Kearns lectures and researches at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. For the past seven or eight years he has been running a series of award winning workshops for researchers and research students at about half of all the Australian universities. He now runs intensive workshop programs with several of the leading Research Centres in Australia.

In 2008 he wrote The Balanced Researcher booklet for Vitae and followed this up with a workshop of the same name. Hugh and his colleague have also authored a number of very popular books aimed at research students.

Hugh's area of research and expertise is in self-management, that is issues such as procrastination, overcommitment, perfectionism. My research in this area shows that technical expertise/knowledge is only one part of what makes a researcher successful. A significant area is the ability to manage yourself. These workshops make immediate and significant differences and the participants enjoy them.
