Audience: Female research staff and academics in the science, engineering and technology fields
A combination of 2 free workshops, organised by the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) and Vitae NW Hub to support women research and teaching staff progressing their careers within science, engineering & technology fields. This course has been developed to address issues of particular relevance to women working in a SET academic environment.
Workshop 1: Managing working relationships
09:30-12:30
To be a successful researcher, it is essential to build a wide network of potential collaborators and develop effective working relationships. This workshop will:
- Explore ways to improve your networking skills
- Enhance your confidence and assertiveness in a supportive environment
Networking lunch
12:30-13:45
A chance to build your contacts network and learn more about how UKRC and Vitae can support your personal and professional development.
Workshop 2: Managing yourself
13:45-16:45
As a female researcher, you may find managing your work and family commitments a challenge. This workshop will:
- Explore what a work-life balance actually means and how to achieve it
- Consider strategies for managing a career break and returning to work

About the facilitator:
Janet Wilkinson is an experienced skills trainer for postgraduates and researchers and other female academics who have managed their careers successfully. Janet is a collaborative person who has a keen interest in individual development. She has considerable experience in managing people, providing learning and development experiences for groups and designing materials for use by researchers. For the last five years she has run training and development organisation Three Times Three Consulting. Involved with Vitae for many years she has tutored groups for over ten years, directed six national GRAD Schools and seven local programmes in the last seven years as well as trained tutors to work on the programmes. More recently Janet co-developed The Effective Researcher programme with Dr Sara Shinton, Edinburgh University and Vitae. This was shortlisted in November 2007 for a THES Award for early career researchers and the programme is run by staff and training associates at universities countrywide and through Vitae regional hubs. In 2009 she developed the materials to be delivered as part of a collaboration between all the Scottish Universities and the Scottish Funding Council encouraging innovation and creativity in research. Janet is an Associate Fellow at Warwick Business School.
