Event overview
Audience: Researcher developers and other staff supporting the development of supervisors and principal investigators
Time: 13:00-16:30 (with a networking lunch provided from 12:15)
This half-day workshop will explore best practice in developing supervisors and principal investigators (PIs). Supervisors and PIs are the primary line of support for the early career researchers in their team. This workshop will consider how to effectively support supervisors and PIs in developing their researchers as well as engaging in their own professional development.
The facilitators, experienced in delivering academic development programmes themselves, will design the content of this bespoke workshop according to the topics you would like to be covered. Please provide this information when completing your booking form. Topics covered may include:
- Developmental needs of supervisors and principal investigators
- Vitae resources to support supervisors and principal investigators
- Challenges and solutions in engaging academics with their professional and career development
- Practicalities of delivering academic development programmes
- Success stories and top tips
You will be encouraged to share experiences and issues with other researcher developers both throughout the session and after the workshop via a virtual discussion group.

Mary Seacole Building
University of Salford
The Mary Seacole Building is number 11 on the campus map found here. It is approximately 3 minutes walk from Salford Crescent train station which has links to Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations 3 times per hour. There is some car parking available near the building although you will need to purchase a token before leaving the event. Dr Anne Lee - Independent Academic Developer
Anne has been researching effective research supervision for several years, firstly as a Senior Academic Adviser at the University of Surrey and now as a consultant to universities within the UK and across northern Europe. She has been invited to discuss her work with academics at Oxford, Cambridge and Durham Universities, and her work has included collaborating with the University of Roehampton to support their SEDA accredited programme on research supervision, she has run three-day residential workshops in Estonia and carried out a range of assignments with the University of Galway in Northern Ireland. She travels regularly to Sweden where she works on an accredited programme for a research-based university and runs regular short courses for supervisors at the University of Sussex. She is a regular speaker at various conferences (most recently in Norway). Her book ‘Successful Research Supervision' was published by Routledge in 2012. Her current interests are in developing supervisory teams, research ethics and enhancing the quality of academic writing. There is more about her work at www.drannelee.wordpress.com,
Dr Judy Williams, Senior Lecturer and Vitae NW Hub Co-ordinator
Judy Williams is a Senior Lecturer in Manchester Medical School and Faculty Trainer. In 2011 she was awarded the University of Manchester Distinguished Achievement Medal for Teacher of the year and in 2009 she was short listed for the National Times Higher Award for Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers. Judy is the academic lead for the New Academics programme and postgraduate research programme as well as the BBSRC DTP skills training lead. She provides support and training for postgraduate taught students through to senior academics and is responsible for academic training across the faculty. In 2008 she was awarded the North West Hub of Vitae, the national programme for researcher development and has developed a team to provide support and training across the region. She sits on Vitae's strategy board where she helps to shape the national policy on researcher development. Judy has developed a number of supervisor and principal investigator training programmes that are used regionally and nationally.
