Vitae offers several researcher training and development programmes freely available for use by the Higher Education sector.
Overview
All programmes are based on an experiential and interactive learning approach and encourage researchers to work and collaborate with peers from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Vitae resources are:
- piloted in partnership with institutions to ensure that content, resources and support materials are fit for purpose
- supported by a central team who can provide advice and guidance on all aspects of organisation and delivery
- supported by a network of trainers and facilitators who have experience of using the resources and materials
- often developed centrally for use by professionals in HEIs.

Broadening horizons: career management for researchers
The Broadening horizons programme is an interactive and intensive two-day programme that provides research staff with the opportunity, skills and tools to help them proactively engage in their own career development.
Careers in focus
Careers in focus events give postgraduate researchers an insight into a specific career.
Careers in focus: academia
The Careers in focus: academia programme is a highly successful one-day event, presenting postgraduate researchers with an opportunity to gain an insight into the roles and responsibilities of an academic career.
GRADschools
GRADschools are designed to enable postgraduate researchers to:
- develop their personal effectiveness
- identify ways to communicate effectively
- make more informed choices about their future and own and manage the next step of their careers.
Courses are designed by Vitae or the host institutions within a recommended framework, are three or four days in length and can be either residential or non-residential.
How to be an effective researcher for postgraduate researcher
A finalist in the 2007 Times Higher Education Awards, the 'How to be an effective researcher' programme for postgraduate researchers is a two day non-residential workshop aimed at postgraduate researchers who are three to twelve months into their doctoral studies.
How to be an effective researcher for research staff
The 'How to be an effective researcher' for research staff has been developed to enable research staff to explore the practical skills required for successful project management and the further development of intellectual independence.
Part-time researcher
Vitae has produced a collection of resources to help HEIs to enhance the experience of part-time researchers. These include a research report, training resource pack and DVD of part-time researcher success stories.
