RCUK

The Research Councils UK is the strategic partnership of the UK's seven Research Councils; they invest annually around £2.7 billion in research, covering the full spectrum of academic disciplines from the medical and biological sciences to astronomy, physics, chemistry and engineering, social sciences, economics, and the arts and humanities. The partnership is supported by a small strategic unit, working with people across the Research Councils to stimulate and encourage cross-Council collaboration. There are several ways the Research Councils work together, one example being the strategy for research careers. For more information see: http://www.rcuk.ac.uk

Research Information Network

The Research Information Network supports the development of effective information strategies and practices for the UK's research community. Through conducting research, providing guidance and promoting innovation, we aim to meet the needs of researchers, institutions, funders, information professionals and everyone who plays a role in the research information landscape.

Researchers in Residence

Researchers in Residence (RinR) is a Research Councils UK (RCUK) funded, placement scheme for early career researchers (PhD and post doc).

RinR matches researchers with host secondary schools and provides an opportunity to engage 11-19 year olds with research and academic careers.

In line with the Roberts agenda RinR helps early-career researchers to develop their transferable skills, such as communication, which may help to improve their employability and career progression.

Engaging the public with research and it's broader implications to maximize its impact, can be a consideration when grant proposals are assessed. Therefore, being able to demonstrate on-going or planned outreach arrangements in schools may help researchers to secure future funding.

Free, expert communication training is provided to help researchers' develop placement ideas. The Scheme undertakes CRB checks and covers associated travel and subsistence costs. There is also a dedicated helpline available to participants to contact with any general queries or concerns.

The Scheme is open to all PhD students and post docs that are funded directly or indirectly by one of the seven UK Research Councils or the Wellcome Trust.

For more information or to apply, please visit http://www.researchersinresidence.ac.uk or call 0845 365 7470.
