Joint Skills Statement
Joint Skills Statement of Skills Training Requirements
In 2001 the UK Research Councils in collaboration with the UK GRAD Programme and the HE sector developed the Joint Statement of Skills Training Requirements of Research Postgraduates.
This document sets out a joint statement of the skills that postgraduate researchers funded by the Research Councils would be expected to develop during their research training.
These skills may be present on commencement, explicitly taught, or developed during the course of the research. It is expected that different mechanisms will be used to support learning as appropriate, including self-direction, supervisor support and mentoring, departmental support, workshops, conferences, elective training courses, formally assessed courses and informal opportunities.
The statement covers seven sections
- A: research skills and techniques
- B: research environment
- C: research management
- D: personal effectiveness
- E: communication skills
- F: teamworking and networking skills
- G: career management
This statement has proved to be a useful framework to consider the development of the personal and professional skills of postgraduate researchers.
It is embedded in the QAA Code of practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards in higher education, Section 1: Postgraduate research programmes
It is used by many institutions within their provision for research degree programmes:
- for training needs analysis (TNA) on induction and throughout the course of the PhD studies
- as a basis for tools for personal development planning (PDP)
- to map their provision of training courses against the Roberts' recommendations.
