Practical coaching skills13 July 2010
Event overview
Audience: Trainers and other staff supporting researcher development
The workshop will give a brief introduction to coaching for trainers and other staff supporting researcher development, and to the concepts of directional and non-directional coaching. It will look at the attributes of a good coach, and will examine some of the principles underpinning the coaching process – building relationships, the responsibilities within the coaching process and the beliefs necessary to ensure a coaching interaction based on integrity. We will also look at who can coach, and when and how to use it, and some of the barriers to coaching. The session will then move onto the basic skills of coaching, namely:
- Building relationships
- Listening
- Using intuition
- Asking questions
- Giving feedback
We will look at the coaching process – the guiding principles, establishing conversations, identifying the goal, getting an understanding of the issues, defining agreements and conclusions, how to close the session and how to make the process work for you as an individual. In longer workshops we will also look in more detail at the structure and process of longer coaching engagements – the context, the direction, the learning and the completion, giving a complete framework for coaching.
This workshop will allow participants to understand the framework for coaching, the process and the skills required. We will have the opportunity to practice the skills, and to coach and be coached. By the end of the day the participants will have had a thorough introduction to the coaching process, will be able to coach at a ‘starter’ level, and will be able to make an informed decision as to whether and how to develop their coaching skills further.
