Supervising Chinese Research Students

January 13, 2010

University of Sussex

09:30 – 16:30

The workshop will use the theoretical perspectives of cross-cultural psychology to

explain how Western supervision processes of Chinese research students are

influenced by variables in the way that Chinese people communicate, perceive their

relationships with each other and deal with conflict. It will examine the educational

background of Chinese research students and the cultural and political differences

between Chinese and Western societies. Interactive presentations will provide

strategies for Western supervisors and Chinese research students to better

understand each other’s backgrounds and perspectives in relation to the

commencement of candidature and the formulation of a research question, the

provision of feedback on written work during candidature and the presentation of

conclusions and the submission of the thesis.

Places on this workshop are free but places will be limited. To book a place please

email your name, institution, position and any dietary requirements to Ross on
