Midlands and SWW Hub Cross Cultural Issues Workshop12 January 2010
Event overview
A full day (10am-3pm) workshop for supervisors and research managers with the morning covering general cross-cultural communication issues and the afternoon covering practical ways and potential problems in supervising students from another culture.
International students by reason of their numbers and growing economic and educational importance are crucial to:
- The higher education sector
- The competitive edge of UK universities
- Profitability and cost-effectiveness
Supervisors are being faced with guiding international researchers through their research degrees and occaisionally a clash of cultures can lead to higher drop out figures and lower completion rates.
Dr Mona Chung and Professor Richard Ingleby have first hand experience of dealing with these cross cultural issues across western and easten cultures, and have a range of tools and examples for dealing with these issues in a student/supervisor relationship.
Dr Mona Chung is a bi-cultural expert in cross-cultural communication whose work addresses the cultural gaps between Australians and Chinese in the fields of commerce and education. She specialises in strategic planning, management and marketing practice for international organisations (both commercial and educational) to understand the Chinese market. Dr Chung is a frequent guest speaker at public forums and tertiary institutions and is the author of an extensive list of publications in cross-cultural business studies.
Professor Richard Ingleby is a member of the Victorian Bar and a Visiting Professor at North China University of Technology. His DPhil from Wolfson College, Oxford University and subsequent research on negotiation and dispute resolution and experience as Director of Research Training at Deakin University has led to current collaborative projects with Dr Chung and international partners in the areas of cross-cultural negotiation and supervision of international students.
