Vitae SWW Hub: Focus on...the Digital Researcher and you

Room 4D29

University of the West of England

10.00- 16.00

Audience: staff supporting researchers

Delivered by: Dr Tristram Hooley (Head of iCeGS, University of Derby) and Dr Paul Spencer (Research Skills Development Officer, University of the West of England)

  • Do you tweet?
  • Have you ever blogged?
  • Should you?
  • Do your researchers?
  • Should they?

This one day workshop will provide staff involved in supporting researchers with an insight into a range of new social tools and explore their utility for both supporting researchers and undertaking research. Social tools like Facebook and Twitter have rapidly become a ubiquitous part of our culture. However, the question remains as to whether they are appropriate for use in high education.

This workshop will also  demonstrate how social tools can be used by researcher developers to form a community of practice and by researchers as an integral part of their work.

The programme will be hands on and will cover RSS feeds, Twitter, tools for sharing presentations and slides, blogging, social citation sharing and most importantly what does all of this mean and why would you ever want to use it.

The key aims of the day are to:

  • give you an understanding of how social media tools can help you develop, reflect upon and share your own professional practice
  • give you tool that you can use to engage with researchers and promote activities to them
  • give you insight into how and why researchers are using social media
    be practical and interactive
  • give you  the opportunity to learn and use five social media tools
