South West and Wales Hub

The SWW Hub is hosted by Cardiff University, organisationally based in the Graduate Centre and physically based in the Univeristy Graduate Schools office.  We are an established Hub with involvement from the 18 HEIs in our region.  We have a network in the South West and a network in Wales, which concentrate on issues specific to physical and political geography such as local collaboration.  These networks provide representation to our Regional Steering Group, which directs our activities and services.

We have a full calendar of events for staff supporting researchers which include a region-wide Annual Conference and several topic based events each year, covering subjects such as Blended Learning, Evaluation, and Facilitation Skills.  We also facilitate regional access to training events for researchers including local GRADschools and Effective Researcher.

Regional resources

The Hub holds a variety of resources that you or your institution may wish to borrow for use in training sessions (see below for details).

If you are interested in borrowing any of the following, please contact us. There is no charge for borrowing the equipment, but we will ask you to pay the postage back to us!

Effective Researcher for PGRs kit - contains all the resources and equipment you need to run this course.

Effective Researcher for Research Staff -  a set of laminated handouts for use in this course.

Colourblind - develops communication skills . As participants work through this activity-based learning tool they refine skills that will help them to save time, effort and money by ensuring common understanding between people involved in projects. The emphasis on checking and feedback are vital to those involved in teaching, instructing or delegating responsibility. The exercise also demonstrates how communication breaks down in particular groups or teams, enabling them to identify their own specific problems so that they can correct them together.

Cultural Connections - a card game that allows teams and individuals to raise their awareness of some of the researched differences in people based upon national culture.

Webmaster - the team members are required to work out how to assemble a set of different metal and rope components to make a 'web' which is identical to the black and white design pattern they have received. There is only one answer to the problem and this has to be established through a process of logic and some trial and error. Detailed planning at this stage is ineffective as the theories must be tested in practice at an early stage. Once the assembly is complete, the team must develop and rehearse a strategy for taking the web to pieces and re-building it accurately against the clock. As the pieces cannot be marked or pre-sorted they need a well-developed plan for identifying components and using manpower efficiently if they are to succeed.

Workstations -  is a team communication and information-sharing activity which is ideal for groups not previously experienced in working together. It is packaged as an extremely portable box of playing cards containing delegate briefing instructions, facilitator instructions and review suggestions within the box of cards.

Learning Loops - can be used to create an engaging team or solo-based card game which tests understanding of any body of factual knowledge.

Challenging Assumptions - raises the awareness of a group of learners about the pre-conceptions and assumptions we bring into new situations.

Seeing The Point - each individual or small team has 7 pieces and is simply asked to create a number of shapes using the components supplied. Getting that last shape is where the real creative thought is required!

Images of Organisations - contains carefully designed and selected images that represent a range of experiences and emotions. The images are designed to be metaphors through which individuals and teams can explore organisational issues. For many, talking about the pictures is a safe way of expressing feelings and hopes that may have been considered too personal to be discussed in a business context.

Counter Intelligence -  focuses on task supervision: establishing and controlling a process, giving clear instructions, asking for and summarising inputs and setting out next steps.
