Mentoring schemes for Research Staff 08 March 2010

Event overview

Many institutions are starting to develop mentoring schemes for their researchers, as became clear at a recent MRSDG meeting. There are many possible models for such schemes and the group wished to have an opportunity to explore this further.  This event is an opportunity for sharing of practice and for participants to consider different possible approaches to mentoring, with a focus on research staff.

3.10 - Mentoring Scheme Case Study 3 - University of Manchester (Gemma Muckle)

3.30 - Break

3.45 - 4.45 pm - Practice sharing discussion - introducing mentoring for researchers at your institution.

Michelle Zala, BSc (Hons), PG diploma in e-learning. m.zala@lboro.ac.uk

Michele Zala is Career Development Adviser for Research Staff and works closely with members of the Research Office and Research Staff through the University Departments to provide Career Development support and resources. This will include individual career consultations for Research Staff and careers-related workshops.

Michele brings industry experience, having worked for 12 years in Employee, Career Development and Training for Rolls-Royce plc. She was involved in the career development of employees in the Operations and Project Management functions. She started her career in the IT Sector, having studied BSc Computation at Manchester University she spent 9 years as a Systems Analyst and Project Leader before moving into people development roles

 

Dr Elizabeth Scanlon - Newcastle University elizabeth.scanlon@ncl.ac.uk http://researchstaff.ncl.ac.uk

Elizabeth has a background in Biological Sciences and joined Newcastle University in 2008 as a Research Associate in the Institute of Cell & Molecular Biosciences.  She made a career move into Research Staff Support in April 2009 when she took up her current post.  Elizabeth is the Training and Development Coordinator for research staff across all three faculties.  The main purpose of her role is to support Newcastle University's commitment to meet the terms of The Concordat.  Current projects include supporting the roll-out of a mentoring scheme for research staff and a pilot mentoring scheme involving postgraduate research students.
