Outline

A workshop by definition is an occasion when attendees can participate in ‘learning by experiencing or doing' and in the effective development of research skills, ‘doing' is absolutely essential. However, apart from a different teaching space and occasional paired discussion, workshops in higher education are often indistinguishable from conventional lectures with little experiential learning taking place.

This workshop will aim to demonstrate, share and explore different tools and techniques that can be applied by facilitators in research skills development that give a greater emphasis to learning and experiencing in action. Covering the research skills agenda and including gathering feedback, creative approaches to facilitation will be practised that involve participants in individual, paired and small group action learning.

Through sharing practice this way and with continued collaboration afterwards it is proposed that a valuable addition to the Database of practice could be developed jointly. This will be a resource on the tools and techniques for a more creative approach to facilitation that also identifies what works best for the development of specific research skills.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop attendees will be:

  • drawing more on their own personal creativity for research skills workshop design and delivery
  • equipped with new tools and techniques for research skills workshop delivery
  • familiar with ways to design new active exercises for participants in research skills workshops
  • connected with a group of facilitators wishing to share creative facilitation practice.

Format

Workshop with active participation.
