Personal profile:
Richard works on numerous committees across the university and beyond. He has been instrumental in developing a network of enterprise and generic research skills providers across the north of England with the Northern Enterprise Schools Consortium. He is has worked extensively since 2001 in the growing field of skills training for early career researchers and in 2007 he was lead editor for the book Skills Training in Research Degree Programmes: Politics and Practice for the Open University Press.
Biography:
Prior to his academic career Richard enjoyed a down and out pre university existence enjoying many temporary but interesting jobs including theatre stagehand, Narrow Gauge Engine Driver, Toyshop sales assistant and nightclub impresario. In 1980 he started working at Steamtown Railway Museum Lancashire as site engineer and then as manager. He built miniature and full scale railways including the only railway on a Hebridean island where he also met his future wife. Richard’s research was in American Literature – specifically studying author Kurt Vonnegut. Richard’s specialism was to look at the influence of the Protestant Work Ethic and melancholia in American writing. He was the national postgraduate representative for the British Association of American Studies 1998 –2000 during the time he completed his PhD. He lectured at Edge Hill University College and University of Central Lancashire from 1995 to 2001 when he became the Director of Postgraduate Training for the University of Liverpool. Married to acupuncturist Catherine Swales with two teen age boys he enjoys re-roofing houses, golf and tidying the garage.
Testimonial one:
The University of Liverpool runs a compulsory training programme for its approximately two thousand research students and such a programme requires in depth understanding of research students’ development needs and a keen sense of what is strategic –for PGRs themselves, for the University and for Higher Education culture as a whole. Such a programme also needs to be innovative and to provide training appropriate for all researchers. Richard’s lead in developing the Skills Programme at Liverpool has ensured that the programme meets these goals and each year has offered more choice in both first year provision and for career skills. In professional terms he is an excellent tutor, deliverer and facilitator, with a track record of directing and organising large residential events (e.g the Liverpool Enterprise School), and experience of a wide range of training from supervisor workshops to first year PGR courses, from enterprise to writing skills. Using a variety of techniques and tools he creates effective discussion and challenges assumptions, to keep his audiences engaged and enthused. Dr Graham Kemp, Faculty Director Of Postgraduate Research, Health and Life Sciences.
