- Relevant qualifications:
- for my current position - PhD in Avian Ecology; MSc in Animal Nutrition; BSc (Hons) Zoology. as a Tutor - I've participated in 9 GRADSchools, at both national and local levels delivering the case studies 'In bed with a mosquito and Castlefield Challenge' I've also been part of subject-focussed programmes such as EnviroGRAD and the UKERC Summer School.
- Personal profile:
- I’ve built into my job many features of an academic career – lecturing, conducting research (including supervision of Masters/PhD students with university partners), publishing papers etc., - but in the not-for-profit sector, working for an animal conservation charity.
- Biography:
- Andrea Fidgett - zoo nutritionist, Chester Zoo. Andrea arrived at her current niche, as a comparative wildlife nutritionist menu-planning for 450+ species, by serendipity and persistence in equal measure. Chester Zoo attracts more than one million visitors annually and is a leading zoological collection with an international reputation for conservation, research and education. Based there since 2002, Andrea remains the only full-time nutritionist employed by a UK zoo and she has lectured at universities and zoos in Europe, North America, South Africa, India and China. Following her Zoology degree, she conducted research on endangered species, completed both an MSc and PhD in nutrition and designed specialist software for university teaching and zoos. An academic career was never the goal; study was a means to an end (and at times, a necessary evil) - the goal being employed in conservation biology. Attending a GRADschool during her PhD helped her recognise and learn skills she had beyond her subject knowledge, particularly people (read ‘supervisor’) management. Participating in them now as a tutor is an extension of that process… Plus its always great fun! She has mainly been a zoologist, but supplemented student grants working in record shops, cinemas, Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall and teaching IT. As a volunteer she has run science education events for 8-12 year olds, worked with visually impaired people (transcribing Braille, talking textbooks and telefriending) and enjoys being a backstage member of the Hawarden Players.
