- Personal profile:
- Dr. Sarah Haas helps research writers of all levels (master's students, PhD students, postdoctoral candidates and academic staff) take control of their writing processes, and develop into self-sufficient, confident and effective writers. Her Writer Development Courses have run, with great success, in several countries across a wide variety of academic disciplines. Sarah has a holistic approach, addressing many facets of writing and being a writer, yet she keeps a clear focus on the end product: high-quality academic text. Participants in her courses find her knowledgable and professional, yet approachable and supportive.
- Biography:
- Sarah Haas has been facilitating Writer Development workshops and retreats at various universities in Japan and Europe for the past several years. Her research is practice-driven, resulting in continual improvement of practice.
- Testimonial one:
- Sarah Haas has facilitated both residential and non residential Writing Retreats for the Graduate School here at the University of Kent for three years. These retreats are always extremely popular and are constantly in very high demand with researchers and postgraduate research students. Sarah has run retreats at institutions worldwide and thus has a vast range of experience which she brings to her sessions. Feedback from Sarah's retreats is always positive: "Sarah was strict but supportive, encouraging, approachable and brilliant!" "Sarah was excellent and the format of the workshop was very good. This was one of the best skills training sessions that I have ever attended." "Sarah was very supportive, accommodating and encouraging." - Testimonial two:
- I first met Sarah Haas at a Writers’ Retreat run by Rowena Murray in Scotland. Her interests in academic writing especially for postgraduates and academic staff coincided almost exactly with mine. I then became more and more aware of her development of a model of the writing process. This led me to inviting her to run a workshop at the annual Postgraduate Research Students’ Conference at Anglia Ruskin University in 2008. This was so successful that the Director of Anglia’s Research Support Unit invited her to give a keynote presentation on her research at the annual conference held in 2010. This, too, was extremely well-received. As a direct result Sarah has now been invited to speak to a research supervisors’ conference at Anglia in September 2011 and I understand that the Faculty of Education will also be approaching her for a presentation on academic writing. I also know that Sarah runs successful writers’ seminars and writer development courses for several other universities. It is significant that, as with her experience with Anglia, she is always invited to return. This is invariably because of the value of her material as well as the skills she employs as a presenter and facilitator. - Testimonial three:
- Sarah Haas recently facilitated a 3-hour workshop for our TESOL and Applied Linguistics on our MA programmes at the School of Languages and Social Sciences at Aston University in Birmingham. The workshop was scheduled to coincide with the students’ preparation towards selecting a dissertation topic as part of the next stage of their programmes. Sarah established a good rapport with the group as soon as she started her workshop. Her friendly, calm and collected manner, and her cheerful personality, put the students at ease and encouraged the students to interact well with one another as well as with her as the workshop facilitator. The session was well-balanced, and practical. I know that Sarah’s workshop provided useful guidance for those students who had, until that point in time, been struggling to find a research topic, narrow down a topic, or formulate research questions. When I met some of the students the next day they commented on how useful Sarah’s workshop had been. I also received emails that clearly indicated the usefulness of the workshop. For example, one student had written: “I found the seminar today with Sarah very informative and constructive and I am happy to say I have now decided my topic which is …” . The quality of the dissertation topic presentations held 10 days after the workshop were also a clear indication that the students had benefited from the workshop for they had all chosen sufficiently narrowed down topic areas and written feasible research questions. I will be inviting Sarah to run a similar workshop next year with the new cohort of students.
