- Personal profile:
- An effective Personal Development professional with a comprehensive mix of experience of people performance, training and development, organisational development, recruitment and selection, compensation and benefits and employee relations gained in a variety of for profit and not for profit organisations in the UK, and worldwide. I have depth and breadth of experience in the design and implementation of personal development programmes, linking people and their performance. Effective and innovative, I provide leadership and bring out the best in others by working with them and developing their performance.
- Biography:
- Paul Toombs has over 30 years experience in enabling people to be superior performers. Since graduating with a Business Management degree Paul has worked with multinational organizations. Before moving into consultancy he worked for SKF, (Swedish), Goodyear, (US), and Portals, (UK). In the UK he retains links with universities and works nationally with Researchers and their Supervisors. He is a Leader for the Effective Researcher and Broadening Horizons courses; and Director and Tutor on GRADschools. He also facilitates skills sessions; and works on personal and career development sessions for undergraduates, PGRs, researchers and academics. Paul is a member of Competency International, a research consortium and consultancy formed to foster collaboration on the design and implementation of competency based interventions which produce measurable results for clients. Internationally he has worked with SP Tyres, Siemens, Lufthansa, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Philip Morris, Hewlett Packard, UME Health in North America; Western, Central and Eastern Europe; Russia; Kazakhstan; Asia, and the UAE. Paul also supports the Windsor Fellowship, a charity that runs personal development and training programmes targeting talented Black and Asian students in the UK. In 1986, Paul became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management. He sits on the Branch Committee and has served on the International Committee. He has a passion for assessing and coaching people with their personal and career development using a competency based approach. Outside of his work he enjoys theatre, modern art, sport and the gym.
- Testimonial one:
- I have had the pleasure of working on two national GRADSchools as a tutor where Paul has been the course director. In this role I have found him to be extremely supportive of tutors & mentors, providing encouragement and support in achieving their personal goals as facilitators with an air of calm authority. He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge, from both the commercial sector and the higher education sector that provides a firm foundation for any course that he contributes to. Many participants on these courses have commented how much they appreciate being able to chat about career options with someone of his calibre. I have also commissioned Paul to facilitate a session on enterprise skills for research students as part of the UWE skills development programme. His background in researching the competencies of superior performers within organisations yields a real sense of gravitas and inspires confidence in participants to ask difficult questions about workplace scenarios and to explore their competencies that are often outside of their comfort zone. Paul will also be acting as the course director for the forthcoming South West Universities GRADSchool in June 2009. He has already been instrumental in shaping the programme and enthusing the tutors. I have no doubt that he will bring a calm, cool, competent air with him that will set the tone for the course. - Testimonial three:
- I have worked with Paul Toombs in developing the Vitae Phase 2 project for Intrapreneurship, in a partnership creating the project vision and turning this into the reality for researcher development of an intrapreneurial lens, focussing on intrapreneurial capabilities and the training which would support this. Paul brought a professional business approach to the project as well as his own experience in business and excellent training skills. Reflection on superior performance and what that might mean for researchers as well as successful business managers was introduced to the project by Paul. This has permeated through into new training materials developed by Paul, well received by researchers, and now available to other trainers. Paul has a vast range of experience which is of value for both developing and delivering innovative well-grounded approaches to researcher development.
