Experience Back to top

Job title:
Freelance consultant
Current institution:
Hutchinson Training & Development
Relevant qualifications:
Coactive Coaching (CTI: Fundamentals & Intermediate training) MBTI practitioner PhD Linguistics
Personal profile:
An independent consultant, specialising in providing training and development for researchers in the higher education sector.
Biography:
Helen grew up in the midst of rural Devon and then graduated from what is now York St John College with a Language Studies and English Literature degree. After a brief foray into retail management she decided there was more to life than folding jumpers and returned to studying. Passing through an MA, a research post and a wonderful job as a picture-framer's assistant on the way, she fell into a PhD in Linguistic Science, specialising in variationist sociolinguistics. Following her surprise at successfully completing her PhD, Helen accepted a post-doctoral research job that involved setting up and supervising a team of junior researchers and managing an awful lot of recorded data, transcriptions, statistics and papers. At the end of the contract, Helen breathed a sigh of relief and grabbed with both hands the opportunity to work on the University of York's transferable skills programme for research students, which she did for five years. She’s a registered Myers Briggs Type Indicator practitioner and a trained coactive coach. She spends considerable amounts of time working voluntarily for a large city centre church, overseeing services, co-ordinating volunteers for regular and special events, recruiting paid and voluntary staff and, the bit that she likes the best, contributing to staff training and development.
Testimonial one:
"Excellent facilitator - best training days I've attended!" Participant, Royal Holloway University of London. January 2009.
Testimonial two:
"The MBTI training day for our full staff team in the Spring of 2008 was invaluable to our team development strategy. The team grasped quickly, under Helen’s guidance, how the different personality types worked and we had a lot of laughs as we began to understand our strengths and weaknesses in areas. It was a very positive experience for individuals in the team to see how they fitted in and to understand that they were not alone in how they approached different issues and challenges." Mark Rance, Head of Operations, St Michael le Belfrey, York. February 2008.
