Experience Back to top

Job title:
Trainer & Facilitator - Director
Current institution:
Education-Training Ltd
Relevant qualifications:
MBTi practitioner
Personal profile:
Dave develops and delivers training for doctoral researchers, research staff, supervisors, and University teachers from across the UK, Europe and further east into the Balkans and Caucasus. His interests range from inter cultural communication, research collaboration and team-development, to negotiation, assertiveness and conflict avoidance / resolution. He is happy to advise on training needs, deliver existing programmes, or develop bespoke materials for a range of training contexts in higher education. He has worked in institutions across the sector, and throughout the UK, as well as a number of major projects further into Europe, primarily with the British Council and with the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute(New York and Budapest), and a number of Marie Curie projects.
Biography:
Dave’s education meandered from law, via international conflict analysis, before completing a doctorate in public international law, examining the ‘legal’ treatment of ‘failed states’. Distractions along the way included time spent as a students’ union sabbatical officer, as warden of a large halls of residence complex, teaching a range of undergrad courses, and being manager of a children’s leisure centre (including dressing-up in a bear costume). Since finishing his PhD, Dave has meandered geographically, having lived and worked in Bulgaria, Hungary, Macedonia, and most recently in Serbia (where he spends about a fifth of his time). He worked for an international not-for-profit organisation (Civic Education Project) for 4 years, variously as a visiting lecturer, as manager training programmes for academics in former Communist countries across eastern Europe, and as in-country manager of a curriculum reform project in Macedonia. The assimilation of CEP into a larger organisation marked the time for Dave to take a side-step into freelance work as a trainer, consultant and facilitator. He now runs his own training company, based in the UK, developing and delivering training in higher education in the UK, western Europe, the Balkans and the Caucasus. His ‘spare’ time is filled with being an Associate Lecturer for the Open University, studying computer science, being ‘Tata’ to his beautiful baby daughter, and (still) searching for the perfect cup of coffee.
