Personal profile:
Fionnuala currently works as a Lead Technologist at the Technology Strategy Board, the government organisation founded in July 2007, which funds companies to do innovative research. This work involves networking and knowing a wide community of technical experts and business leaders, setting the strategy for UK funding in the area of buildings and managing the awarding of government funds in research projects.
Biography:
On leaving school, Fionnuala studied Mechanical Engineering in University College Dublin, Ireland before moving to the UK to work for steel maker Corus in the chaos of production. She very quickly realised that heavy industry wasn’t for her so brought her love of metals to Manchester where she did an MSc and PhD in steel and aluminium alloys at UMIST. During her postgrad she discovered that she enjoyed politics and was an elected executive officer in the student union. This led to a very enjoyable internship in the EU Commission in Brussels and a job in the public sector as a Research Portfolio Manager at the EPSRC before the desire to see academic research coming to life in actual real products brought her back to Manchester to broker university/business research projects. She has been in her current job since Oct 07 as it was a great opportunity to join a brand new organisation and shape the culture of it and innovation in the UK over the next few years. Fionnuala is proud to have always worked with engineers and engineering while working to her strengths of communicating with people and seeing the big picture. In her spare time she likes to surf, run and paint. She dreams of starting an energy efficiency charity that fosters a sense of community.
