Event overview
This GRADschool is for postgraduate researchers studying for a PhD or MPhil at the University of York and the University of Leeds.
This is a FREE residential course that is designed to help you reflect upon and develop the skills you have as a postgraduate researcher. The course encourages you to consider how you can apply your skills now and in the future to help you become a more effective researcher.
The GRADschool is designed to enable you to practice and enhance the following skills:
- A willingness & ability to learn & acquire knowledge
- Being creative, innovative & original in one's approach to research
- Being flexible & open-minded
- Demonstrating self-awareness & the ability to identify own training needs
- Being self-disciplined, motivated & thorough
- Being able to recognise boundaries & draw upon/use sources of support as appropriate
- Initiative, an ability to work independently & self-reliance
During the course you take part in a range of activities and case studies with the emphasis being placed on "learning by doing". You will work in teams with other PhD & MPhil students from the Universities of York and Leeds and with a team of experienced tutors who will either have a background in academia or business.
The York and Leeds Interpersonal Skills School is split into two parts.
Part one: 21st June 2010 - non residential, is run at the University of Leeds (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/mtc)
Part two: 13-14th July 2010 - Residential, is run at the White Hart Hotel, Harrogate (www.whitehart.net)
You MUST be available to attend BOTH parts in order to be eligible to come on the course.
Places are limited and are allocated on a first come first serve basis although third and second year PhD & MPhil students will have priority over those who have just started their research degree.

Entry requirements/cost
This GRADschool is FREE of charge however if you apply and are offered a place on the course you must send in a refundable deposit of £50
This £50 deposit is to confirm your place, and is only acceptable if sent to us as a cheque made payable to the University of Leeds.
If you do not have a cheque book then please arrange for someone to write a cheque on your behalf or we will also accept a signed guarantee from your department agreeing to pay £50 to the University of Leeds if you do not attend both parts of the course without good reason (i.e. Illness etc) and advanced warning.
We cannot accept cash or postal orders
