Dear Karen,
We offer general advice on academic careers here: http://www.vitae.ac.uk/researchers/1303/Developing-your-academic-career.html
Comparing research and non-research careers:
http://www.vitae.ac.uk/researchers/1336/Research-versus-non-research-careers.html
Some specific advice on getting back after a break: http://www.vitae.ac.uk/researchers/1331/Returners.html

You also might find some of the discussions about these sort of topics on the research staff blog of interest (or put up a post with your query and see what fellow researchers reply): www.vitae.ac.uk/rsblog.

Hope that helps,
Tennie

Hi, visited your site as an unemployed post doc doing voluntary work cutting down trees, and am disappointed to find no help on getting into a research carer. I can't be the only one with 8 years of higher education and no job surely?
I would appreciate any directions you can offer to a site which might be able to offer some advice and encouragement - surely all that training and experience can't be unwanted?
