Public administration

The public sector

Public administration is a relatively modest employer of UK doctoral graduates, accounting for around 5% over the period 2003-2005. The range of various disciplines entering the sector is relatively consistent, though its highest numbers are seen in doctoral graduates in social science disciplines (7.5%-10%) and lowest in biomedical sciences (under 3%).

Public administration includes roles within the civil service, government agencies, local government, the intelligence services and the houses of parliament. The sector employs researchers in research and non-research roles. The public sector is increasingly required to meet targets and therefore values commercial awareness in addition to a commitment to public services.

Not-for-profit organisations

The not-for-profit sector, typically with humanitarian, social or environmental objectives is an attractive area for researchers. The sector comprises charities, non-governmental organisations, in addition to publically funded organisations. The competition for paid positions is intense and a prior volunteer commitment is often required.
