in my humble opinion, this is a step backwards for sceince and for research in general. i have restrained myself from posting over the downright awful treatment of Professor Nutt, now we are faced with this. i have to wonder if we are actually going to be able to do our work without interference any longer....

As a bit of idealist I think this is another bad day for science. Science isn't a factory and cannot be treated that way. On a positive note, it could work out well, encouraging scientists to think about commercial benefits of their research is useful - it is something that I experienced only recently (looking at developing a small piece of research into a screening procedure in leukaemia, which may or may not be successful) - but shouldn't be the focus of science. It can complement research, and is also attractive to funders so can benefit a scientist's career. But please don't let the business take over public sector science, where will all chance discoveries come from?
