Royal Society pairing scheme
28 November 2009
By Tennie Videler
At the research staff conference this month Brian Iddon MP urged researchers to be more involved in policy. Here is an example of someone who is actively doing something to build bridges between researchers and members of parliament:
My friend Albert Koulman is shadowing David Howarth MP for a week at Westminster, together with about 20 other researchers as part of the Royal Society pairing scheme. David Howarth will be shadowing Albert in the lab in the future too! Read Albert’s blog on Nature networks. He describes the experience as a great opportunity to meet people he wouldn’t otherwise have met; politicians, but also researchers from other fields.
See if you agree with his speculation about whether there might be any inference for the future funding of research after a possible change of government from the under-representation of Conservative MPs in the scheme....
