Higher education career search
Vacancies in the UK higher education sector are generally advertised widely, though some posts may only be circulated locally so it is important to check the websites of the institutions you are interested in.
Jobs.ac.uk is the main website used by UK institutions to recruit for research, lectureship, teaching and key administrative or support positions. You can browse for jobs by vocation or discipline, and can focus your search regionally. It is now mandatory for UK HE institutions to give a full job specification which includes essential and desirable skills and experience for the position. You can also find vacancies in the national press, the Times Higher Education magazine and in the periodicals and scholarly societies' websites of your field.
Networking is an effective way to find out about upcoming vacancies in higher education. Informal enquiries are generally encouraged, particularly for lectureships and other senior roles. Take advantage of the opportunity to do so, but only after researching all the publicly available information related to the role.
When applying for a role in higher education make sure to get support from your careers service. Plan in advance and try to fill any skill gaps you may have with training and other development opportunities. Talk to colleagues and other members of staff to get further ideas on roles within higher education.
