Practicalities of living abroad
Moving country is not a trivial undertaking. It is important to plan ahead. If possible, visit your host department before you sign your contract. Find out the working language of your host. Research local living costs, including necessary health insurance, childcare or other hidden costs. Moving expenses can be substantial, so bear this in mind when you are negotiating your conditions. It is also important to consider how mobile pension contributions may be in your destination country.
There is advice on international mobility on the UKRSA website
'Monetos is an online European research portal with useful social and financial information on living in different European countries, including guides to opening a bank account, visiting a doctor and renting accommodation.'
The European researcher's national mobility portals and mobility centres offers excellent guidance on the practicalities of moving to countries within the EEA, in addition to information on vacancies, funding and the research landscape.
