Story overview

When I was eight I read about Marie Curie and her work on radioactivity: I thought 'that's what I want to do'. The whole process of experimentation and asking questions really appealed to me. In 1982 I went to Oxford to read medicine – the way we were taught was by total immersion in the basic medical sciences. I knew I wanted to go into research, but was advised to finish my medical training first and to consider research as a clinician scientist.
