Vitae Midlands Hub regional poster competition 201005 July 2010
Event overview
The Vitae Midlands Hub is one of several regional ‘Hubs' run in partnership with Vitae. Vitae is supported by Research Councils UK (RCUK) and managed by CRAC: The Career Development Organisation and is the first national organisation to champion the professional and career development of both doctoral researchers and research staff in higher education institutions and research institutes.
The Midlands Hub supports universities and supervisors in the Midlands to develop the personal and professional skills of researchers in the region. As part of our programme of activity for 2010, we will be holding a poster competition in July. It is open to any postgraduate researcher, in any discipline, studying at a Midlands institution.
Regardless of the area of research, post graduate researchers need to be able to communicate their findings with other people during and at the end of a PhD. This might be through peer reviewed articles, at meetings or in grant proposals. This poster competition will refine these skills in the researchers you put forward.
As the UK Research Councils' Joint Statement of Skills Training Requirements states, researchers also need to be able to critically evaluate their own work and that of others. Therefore we will be asking entrants to give feedback on each other's posters.
We would like to invite you to enter postgraduate researchers at your institution into the poster competition run by the Vitae Midlands Hub. The poster competition is a regional final and will be held at Nottingham Conference Centre on Monday 5th July 2010.

Research summary for a non-specialist audience - rules of entry
- The research summary will include information about the research topic, convey a sense of importance as to why the research is relevant in the 21st century and report any preliminary findings if appropriate.

Each researcher will present one A1 poster. Researchers are also permitted to distribute A4 replica copies of their poster. No other additional handouts or ‘props' will be permitted. Each researcher will be expected to answer questions from the audience and judges about their research and their poster.
Prior to the competition each researcher will be asked to submit a written summary of 150 words which outlines the research referred to in the poster to a non-specialist audience. This will be judged separately and a prize will be awarded to the best summary.
