The public sector
Public administration is a relatively modest employer of UK doctoral graduates, accounting for around 5% over the period 2003-2005. The range of various disciplines entering the sector is relatively consistent, though its highest numbers are seen in doctoral graduates in social science disciplines (7.5%-10%) and lowest in biomedical sciences (under 3%).
Public administration includes roles within the civil service, government agencies, local government, the intelligence services and the houses of parliament. The sector employs researchers in research and non-research roles. The public sector is increasingly required to meet targets and therefore values commercial awareness in addition to a commitment to public services.
- Local government administrator
- Government research officer
- Civil Service fast streamer
- Museum education officer
Not-for-profit organisations
The not-for-profit sector, typically with humanitarian, social or environmental objectives is an attractive area for researchers. The sector comprises charities, non-governmental organisations, in addition to publically funded organisations. The competition for paid positions is intense and a prior volunteer commitment is often required.

just tried to click a link and it took me to a page that said The UK GRAD website is now closed. You will automatically be redirected to the Vitae website. Vitae supports the personal, professional and career development of researchers and builds on the work and activities of the UK GRAD Programme for postgraduate researchers and UK Higher Education Researcher Development (UKHERD) network for research staff.
