Practicalities of completing a doctorate

The practicalities of doing a doctorate differ to some extent per discipline and per institution. When starting out, the process may seem unclear, especially in terms of accessing support and guidance. These pages give advice that supplements the guidance provided in other website sections such as

The supervision process

Managing yourself

Your research.

At the start

During the application process you may be required to write a research proposal, including a research plan followed by starting the supervision process and learning the language of research.

In the middle

As you progress with your doctorate you will have to manage the research process, alongside intensive reading and attending conferences.

Towards completion

The final part of your doctorate consists of writing and submitting your thesis and preparing and sitting your viva.
