By Emma Gillaspy
Over the next week, I will be publishing a daily question related to public engagement. We have been asking these questions to colleagues and other researchers and would like to hear your views too.
Todays question is 'what does public engagement mean to you?'
Answers so far:
• People working with people.
• Sharing knowledge.
• Communicating information effectively.
• 2-way discussion and collaboration - exchange something dynamic.
• Making science interesting and accessible to a wide range of audiences.
• Bringing scientists out of the lab and into the public domain.
• Getting people outside of your normal circle interested and excited about research.
• Anything that develops a better understanding of the (research) work we do.
• Making connections between different communities.
• I like to communicate the scientific process and share the wonders / awe / amazement / joy of the Universe with people.
• It's about interacting with others.
Please add your thoughts below.

Besides the above, public engagement is also about influencing the way (your) research is used and co-shaping the social demand for research. And it's about making sure that you give a consistent message even though you need to use language appropriate for different publics.
