The pursuit of knowledge in the modern age is no longer a question of isolated scientists, working alone in their laboratories to discover the secrets of alchemy

Instead it is a global venture with interaction and collaboration between people from all over the world.  It is now considered normal, and even desirable, for researchers to spend part of their career in a foreign country and this can be an exciting and rewarding experience, expanding both professional and personal horizons.  However, it is not always easy to uproot oneself from familiar surroundings and sometimes the move to another country can seem daunting.  Simple things, like how to open a bank account or find out about child care, become more difficult in a foreign country.

As the UK’s international cultural relations organisation, the British Council has produced a website aimed at making the transition to life in the UK easier, so that instead of worrying about practicalities you can relax and enjoy the experience.

The website has information on practical issues, such as visas, tax and childcare, as well as jobs and funding resources. Information for researchers wanting to leave the UK to pursue their research career elsewhere is also available.  It is the UK component of EURAXESS - Researchers in Motion, a joint initiative of the European Commission and 35 countries across Europe.
