Sector introduction
The pharmaceutical industry is concerned with the research, development and manufacture of pharmaceutical products.
The UK pharmaceutical industry is the fourth largest exporter in Europe (£20.8bn in 2009). Two of the global top ten corporations are in the UK, with a combined global market share of 10.1% [Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals: A Future Skills Review, 2009].
The pharmaceutical industry is believed to have employed just over 45,000 people in the UK in 2010.
