Key employers

The sector is dominated by the National Health Service, the largest employer in the UK, but this is composed of many organisations and establishments. In 2008, the UK had around 45,000 healthcare establishments, 67% of which had ten or fewer employees - these were mainly in the independent or voluntary sector1. For details of employers within the sector, visit the NHS employers list, which is organised by region.

There are also a number of large, high-profile international organisations within the sector such as the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation.
