According to the 2010 R&D Scoreboard, 222 of the 1000 top UK companies by R&D spend were in engineering, manufacturing or construction, with a total R&D spend of over £4bn in 2009 [2010 R&D Scoreboard]. The top companies by R&D spend were all in aerospace or automotive engineering; Rolls Royce; Airbus; Ford; Bentley and Jaguar, with Selex Sensors the other company to have spent more than £100m on R&D in 2009. The largest R&D investors per head were glass and materials engineers: Pilkingtons; medium-sized component manufacturers Plastic Logic; the small auto part manufacturer Antonov; Toshiba and Mercedes-Benz.

Caterpillar Marine Power; Rosemount Aerospace; Page Aerospace; Plastic Logic; Rapiscan Systems (manufacturer of security and scanning systems for airports); Logan Teleflex (manufacturer of airport baggage handling systems); Bombardier Aerospace and Siemens all saw R&D investment increase by over 200% in the four years to 2009.
