Getting started

Securing a new position or making career plans may seem daunting, but it is important to start as soon as possible.

  • Talk to your research manager or supervisor and colleagues. What career paths have they taken to arrive in their present position.
  • What careers did former members of your department or research group embark on? Find out and see if you can get in touch with these individuals.
  • Access careers advice and guidance from your institutions careers service.
  • Take advantage of training and development programmes. Many of these will include elements that are aimed directly at researchers like yourself.
  • Use the What do researchers' do? publications and career stories that are held on the Vitae website to see what others from your discipline went on to do.
