Constraints

There are a number of factors that are likely to constrain your career progression.  Many of these factors are about considering your work/life balance as much as they are about overcoming challenges.

Think through the following issues:

  • your mindset or attitudes - is there anything about how you see yourself that is limiting your choices or holding you back?
  • responsibilities/commitments - do your responsibilities make it more difficult for you to change jobs/take on more responsibility/relocate? If so what are the implications for your career?
  • health issues - are there any issues with your health or with the health of those around you that impact on your career?
  • resources - do you struggle to find the time or money to engage in personal development or job searching
  • other people - what is the role of others in encouraging you to develop your career or to remain in your current situation.
  • lack of information - how well informed are you about opportunities and the labour market?

Add in any other factors that may hold you back.

Appreciating your constraints helps you make realistic decisions and plans so that you do not feel perpetually under pressure or disappointed. You may also be able to reduce them or find support from others. Consider whom you can count on for support and help, including family, friends and colleagues.  The Help and support pages point to sources of support in your institution and beyond, and suggest some career development resources.
