Biography

Tim Williams

Tim is currently in the third year of his PhD at the University of Birmingham, having previously completed a degree in materials engineering there in 2019 – receiving an award for achieving the highest overall mark in his cohort. His passion for both academia and engineering applications led him to pursue a PhD investigating jet engine materials, in partnership with Rolls-Royce.

Tim’s research centres around the nickel superalloys used in the hottest sections of aircraft jet engines and how they resist the growth of cracks when subjected to extremely hostile conditions. This work involves performing lab-based tests to measure crack growth, interpreting data used in both academia and industry, and forming models to predict future behaviour.

In addition to his studies, Tim is currently serving as President of the Rolls-Royce Doctorate Network, a student-led network which organises seminars, networking events, and conferences to all the doctorate students supported by Rolls-Royce across the globe.
