Biography

For the past eight years Richy Hetherington has been the Research Student Development Co-ordinator in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University. Initially researching a package of support for research students’ professional development, Dr Hetherington’s role is now as a lecturer maintaining and developing the programme delivered for research students. Dr Hetherington is the module leader of the masters in Medical Biotechnology and Bioscience Innovation and plays a key role in postgraduate internships and industrial liaison. Dr Hetherington’s support to researchers is guided through his own experience as a researcher at Harper Adams University College and though completing a doctorate in Evolutionary Genetics at Imperial College, London. Experience drawn from several years as an R&D scientist in a Biotech SME, industrial quality assurance and as an analyst for the NHS allows Dr Hetherington to give perspective from a broad range of working environments. Dr Hetherington has led a JISC funded project to analyse and emphasise the positive impacts of research with engagement in Medical Sciences at Newcastle.
