Biography

Since arriving at Leicester in 2007 I have helped the University develop innovative approaches to teaching chemistry. Between 2007-2009, in collaboration with Dr Jonny Woodward and Professor Dai Davies, I developed and evaluated a series of Context/Problem Based Learning (C/PBL) case studies and embedded these into year one of the chemistry course at Leicester. My research into C/PBL approaches to teaching has been published in peer-reviewed literature and has led to me acting as a consultant to universities new to the approach.

In June 2012 I was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship. The University of Leicester Teaching Fellowship scheme celebrates excellence in teaching and related activities that support and enhance the Leicester student experience.

Between 2011-2012 I managed a project to develop, evaluate and publish four new peer-reviewed Context and Problem Based Learning Resources (three of which I authored or co-authored) which are available via the Royal Society of Chemistry's LearnChemistry platform.

Since 2011 I have led the development of a series of student-generated multimedia resources that support the learning process. I have also recently developed a new module on Science Communication which is delivered using C/PBL approaches. Since 2013 I have led a project to develop a peer-mentoring network for students intending to undertake industrial placement years.

My current research is focused on pedagogical themes such as active approaches to teaching and learning in chemistry and skills development in STEM degrees.

I am a Member of both the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the RSC Tertiary Education Committee. I am also a contributor to the HEA ‘New Directions’ and 'Reviews' journals.
